Keep Your Identity Safe-Remove These Things from Your Wallet

AARP and Jon Clay, cybersecurity expert for Trend Micro, suggest removing  ten items from your wallet. They suggest that you keep them safe in a fireproof lock box at home or a safe deposit box at your bank.  Some recommendations are familiar but others will make you scratch your head.

Obviously, safely store your:

  • Social Security card
  • COVID-19 vaccination record card, which carries your date of birth and hints at where you live
  • Passport or passport card
  • List of passwords
  • Birth certificate

But most of us regularly carry the following items with us every day in a pocket, briefcase, or at the bottom of the black hole that we women refer to as our "purse" or "handbag:"

  • Work ID card.
  • Multiple credit cards and credit-card receipts
  • Gift card not fully redeemed.
  • Library card
